Female grantMore than 50 years ago, the now 73-year-old Marina van Damme was one of the few women who studied at TU Delft.

Later, she enjoyed a splendid career: in the 1970s she even led Akzo Corporate. Van Damme%s convinced that then, as now, women in academics need a stimulus in their careers. And that’s why today a promising female Delft alumnus will receive the UfD Marine van Damme Grant, worth 8,000 euros, which the winner should spend on activities aimed at broadening her intellectual horizon. The nominees are: Berit Ann Roos and Fatima Mzallassi (Architecture) and Jana Tatur (Biotechnology). What these talented women have in common, besides graduating from TU Delft less than four years ago, is that their parents never attended university. This is a key criteria for entering the grant competition. The two runners-up will each receive a ‘consolation prize’ grant worth 500 euros.

Republican students at the University of Colorado (UC) set-up a website to collect complaints about left-leaning faculty members, claiming they want to document discrimination against conservative students and indoctrination to the liberal viewpoint. The CU College Republicans are part of Students for Academic Freedom, a national organization started by California conservative activist David Horowitz, who%s leading an effort to protect US students from what his group sees as harassment and discrimination based on political beliefs. Most US faculty members deny liberal indoctrination exists on campus.
State secrets

A Russian physicist was acquitted of espionage charges for selling information to China that he argued wasn%t classified. Valentin Danilov, 53, who heads a research institute in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, was arrested in September 2001 for selling information on Russia’s space technology. It was one of a series of espionage cases against scientists, raising fears of a state secret service crackdown on poorly paid scientists who were involved in commercial ventures abroad. Prosecutors said they would appeal on procedural grounds.
