Foreign eye

Having lived in Holland for six years now, I know the Dutch language quite well, but I still learn new words now and then. A few days ago I came across the word ‘vergrijzing’, which literary means ‘growing gray’, but is used to denote the demographical ageing of the Dutch population.

Seriously, Dutch people are getting old. The average age of Holland’s population is now 39.2, and every year there are more old people: life expectancy increases and fewer babies are born. The percentage of people on pension is growing dramatically, putting huge financial burdens on the shoulders of the younger generation. It’s no wonder then that in the six years I’ve lived here, I’ve also noticed that every year it gets easier and easier for young, educated foreigners like us to stay here and call this place home.
