Festivals and pop

June is a month that is alive with the sound of funky music and fun festivals in and around Delft.

The multiculturalism of Rotterdam arises once again in a festival. From Saturday June 16 to Friday June 22, the 38th Poetry International Festival takes place. If you want to relax in this busy period, take a break and go to one of the many events of the festival: poetry theater, visual arts, films, music, discussions and of course poetry readings. This will help you forget about exams and deadlines. Asian, African, European and American poets meet to show that poetry doesn’t depend on languages, though translations to English and Dutch are available.

For those who like Spanish culture and flamenco music, the ‘Flamenco op Zuid’ festival is a great opportunity to be introduced to one of the richest European cultures. Flamenco live music, films, dance, an info market and various workshops (including tapas cooking) will bring Spain closer to the Netherlands. For just a short trip to the south of Rotterdam, you can enjoy a Spanish-flavored Saturday afternoon, June 23, from 15:00-24:00.

The Hague can proudly say that it has the biggest free festival in Europe. On the 24th of June, starting at 13:00, the Zuiderpark will change its peaceful park mood to an all-day-long party state. Diverse groups from countries ranging from Jamaica to Italy be up on stage ready to rock, to chill out with reggae beats, to jump around to ska rhythms, or to break out new hip-hop beats. Three different stages, alternative stuff markets and lots of fun will make this year another unique year for the ‘Haagse ParkPop’ festival.

The NYAMA festival will bring its exotic colors to the streets of Delft again this year. On Saturday, June 30, the Doelenplein and the Market square will be the place to be to enjoy street life, music (Amsterdam Klezmer Band, Mala Vita, L’Chaim, Atongo Zimba, George Darko), dance shows (Sambalanco, Capoeira Liberdade), theater, workshops, juggling, a multicultural market, and many events in a program that offers plenty of things to enjoy for free.
