Ideas worth spreading: TEDxDelft Salons

In addition to the main TEDxDelft event on February 27, 2015, a number of other events take place in Delft throughout the year in order to keep the spirit of TED alive. The 2015 Salons are organised jointly by Studium Generale, TEDxDelft and Theatre de Veste.

The Salons are essentially condensed versions of the main event on a smaller scale. There’ll be a mix of speakers, entertainment, interaction and videos from the TED archives.

“The Salons used to take place every month during the lunch break in the TU Delft library, but this turned out to be too limiting with the time and space available,” said Lester Lardenoye, programme coordinator for Studium Generale. “From January 2015, we are bringing the Salons back, bigger and better than before. They will move from the TU Delft campus into the city of Delft to their new home at Theatre de Veste,” he said.

Crossing Bridges is the theme for the 2015 Salons. Not only is there an actual bridge that separates the city centre from TU Delft’s campus, but there’s separation between students and residents of Delft, and between the internationals and the Dutch too. With the Salons, the organisers want to try and bridge those gaps. “The Salons are open to anyone who is interested in the many surprising ways in which science and technology interact with our society, and will fascinate and challenge young and old, students and citizens, natives and expats,” stated Lardenoye.

The first Salon will take place on Sunday, January 25, 2015 from 15:00 to 17:00 in the B&L Theatercafé. “In order to give each Salon its individual focus and flavour, they are organised around themes that bring together science, technology and society. To celebrate the move from the university campus into the town centre, the first Salon will be themed around The City,” explained Lardenoye.

A number of questions will be addressed. How do residents of an area interact with each other? How are spaces created for those residents? What brings a community together? There will be various talks and performances, including TU Delft architecture students presenting their ideas for changing the city of Delft, and one woman who just wants to make the city a prettier place. Subsequent Salons will take place on March 8, 2015 with the theme Art and Technology, and on April 12, 2015 with a different range of topics.

The Salons will take place in English, and entry will be free. You can confirm your attendance by sending an email to TEDxDelftSalon@TEDxDelft.nl or via the Facebook page. See the website for more information.
