“I’m glad it caught your eye”, says Dr. Adrien Moreau over the telephone, “because that’s what graphic design should do.” Moreau, who received his PhD from the faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, hired freelance designer Marylène Labeille for the cover. He explained to her that his research involved a European comparison of bacterial cleaning of wastewater and the subsequent filtering of the bacteria. He likes the way she has put all the elements together.
Normally at wastewater plants, the bacterial sludge is left to sink passively to the bottom of the basin, as the cleaned water flows over the rim. However, filtering out the bacterial residue results in an improved water quality and also requires less space. Passing the water through the filters does require energy, though, especially when the filters get clogged up. Moreau visited eight wastewater treatment plants in Europe that all apply membrane technology differently. Moreau hopes his study will result in improved designs of filtration-based wastewater plants.
