Bringing residents together

The annual event Delfiade provides residents with an opportunity to discover which organisations and businesses catering to locals and expatscan be found in Delft and its surrounding area.

Delft based ETP Holland is organising the fifth annual Delfiade to be held in the centre of Delft on Saturday, October 18 2014. Participating organisations include the TU Delft Science Centre, ACCESS, the Dutch Red Cross and In Touch Rotterdam Expats.

According to event creator Tom Wagemans, the Delfiade aims to “bridge the gap between the residents of Delft”; bringingpeopletogether in the heart of the city.Whilst the day is focused on providing residents with information about what services are available to them, Wagemans hopes that this year’s event provides an opportunity to increase contact with expats living in Delft. “Sometimes I feel like TU Delft is an island within Delft,” says Wagemans, “we want to stimulate more students to join groups in the centre of Delft. With orchestras as well as sports groups giving out information at Delfiade we hope to show them [TU Delft students] all the options available to them.”

Whilst there will be stalls scattered around the city centre providing information for interested residents, there will also be workshops and activities covering a myriad of topics: from free rowing lessons byD.S.R.V Laga rowing club at Oosteinde to free drum lessons from drum school Leo van der Geest and a workshop by Baby Carry Workout. Residents will also be able to enjoy musical performances by various groups including the Prometheus Orchestrawhile younger visitors can enjoy a carousel ride in the main market square, making Delfiade a fun day out for the whole family.

Wagemans is aware of the vital role the weather plays in the success of such an event. “If the weather is nice, we see the city full of visitors. If it is raining and cold then there will obviously be fewer people visit.” Whilst 2013 numbers were lower than anticipated due to bad weather, Wagemans hopes that the weather will benicer this year allowing an expected 30,000 visitors to enjoy the day’s events.

While the majority of events and activitieswill be held in Dutch there will be many organisations represented that are geared towards expat and non-Dutch speaking communities, details of which can be found at www.delfiade.eu.So if you’re interested in finding out more about what lies beyond the borders of TU Delft, visit the Delfiadebetween 10:00 and 17:00 on Saturday, October 18 2014 at the new market square in centre of Delft.
